Step One:
Choose a song/video with a specific political content.
Some Examples:
- U2 - Anti-Flag
- System of a Down - Bad Religion
- Bob Dylan - Dixie Chicks
- Neil Young - Rage Against the Machine
Find the lyrics to the song and show them to me to get approval.
Step Three:
Once your lyrics have been approved, choose a presentation time.
Step Four:
- Write an analysis of the song explaining its historical or political significance. You need to include your opinion of the effectiveness of the song; did it get its message across, how and why?
- Your analysis should also link the song and its message to the enduring understandings of the course. As an example, all presentations should address how “the media do not provide neutral reflections of reality; they affect our decisions and actions” but, depending on your song choice, you will be addressing other understandings.
- In order to sufficiently demonstrate your understanding, I would suggest that your analysis should be long enough to ensure that your presentation, minus the video or song, is three to five minutes long.
Step Five:
On the day of your presentation you need to:
- Play the song or show the video. (A YouTube video with the lyrics displayed is your best option but if you want to show the actual music video make sure you put the lyrics up on the projector during your analysis.
- Give your analysis of the song. You can have notes, but not read them verbatim.
Your evaluation will be based on your demonstrated comprehension of the enduring understandings.
